DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICS EDUCATION AT THE ST. PETERSBURG ELECTROTECHNICAL INSTITUTE OF EMPEROR ALEXANDER III

The history of the origin and development of physics education at the Department of Physics of the St. Petersburg Electrotechnical Institute of Emperor Alexander III (currently St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University-SPb ETU «LETI») is considered. There is a relationship with the teaching of physics in Russia, with the physics school of St. Petersburg University. The article describes the formation of physics teaching in the Technical School of the Postal and Telegraph Department and its development in the Electrotechnical Institute of the Emperor Alexander III. The contribution of outstanding scientists – Professors O. D. Khvolson, V. V. Skobeltsyn, and A. S. Popov to the creation of the physics cabinet and the physics laboratory of the Department of Physics of the Institute is analyzed. The special role of A. S. Popov in the organization of equipping the physics laboratory with modern devices for that time, especially in the course of electricity and magnetism, is noted. Biographies of teachers and laboratory assistants of the Department of Physics, who later became world-famous scientists and made an invaluable contribution to the development of physics science in Russia, are given. Among them it is necessary to distinguish Gershun A. L., Lebedinsky V. K., Zubarev B. I., Rozhansky D. A.
